Abstract
The paper deals with studying the semantic reversion by the law of Meillet and Meringer based on the English lexeme “a tram as a rail type of urban electric transport” in the diachronic aspect. The paper is also aimed at investigating the nature of semantic reversion according to the law of Meillet and Meringer. As everybody knows, this semantic law says, when a lexeme passes from the specialized vocabulary into common use, its meaning expands, and when a lexeme comes to be used in the specialized vocabulary, its meaning is limited within the speech community.
