Abstract

The aim of this article is to conduct a corpus-based comparative study of simplification processes occurring in English translations of a literary text at the lexical level. The study examines such indicators as unique lexemes, reduplicated lexemes, the lexical diversity coefficient, and lexeme frequency lists. The novel by F. M. Dostoevsky «Crime and Punishment» as well as two versions of its English translation by K. Garnett and O. Ready, serve as the material for the study. The phenomenon of simplification is examined using quantitative methods of corpus linguistics, namely, the method of searching and analyzing lexeme frequency lists.
