Abstract

The cognitive approach to studying the nomination of microtoponyms expands the theoretical basis for studying this process, focusing on the semantic and pragmatic aspects reflected in human consciousness. Using the concept of a cognitive toponym as a basic unit of cognitive linguistics, French and Russian microtoponymy in the light of cognitive-linguistic traditions can more convincingly show the specificity of Christian microtoponyms, despite the distinctive features of the ethnic groups under consideration.Like any concept, a topographic concept is a complex phenomenon consisting of a core and a periphery. The concept of “Christianity” is common to both languages under consideration and includes such components as God, faith, cult, saint, temple, and worship in its core. A distinctive feature of Christian toponymy is that natural realities do not play a major role in the nomination of a geographical space. The content of a Christian topographic object is formed under the influence of a religious factor aimed at understanding the essence of a toponymic phenomenon.
