Nicknames as source of formation of German surnames

Abstract
In the centre of this experimental materials are proper names, namely surnames. The article depicts analysis of motivation and peculiarities of the official German surnames, derivated from nicknames. Ten groups of surnames from nicknames were singled out, representing: historical events and facts, features of flora and fauna, profession and occupation of people. The article details characteristics of these surnames from the point of view of their genesis, structure, semantics and functions, which determine their nominative-lexeme status in the surnames-system of the German language. The research is focused on the history of surnames and nicknames, their origin and functions in the German language and social life, the basic objects and the sources which have given the beginnings to the surnames reveal, to be carried out the comparative analysis of an origin Russian and German surnames from nicknames. The most widespread types of surnames are singled out, the reasons of their occurrence are revealed.
