Syncretism as language evolution incentive

Abstract


The article deals with the issue of foreign words functioning in the contemporary Russian lexicon. The paper studies the word “vibe” that has been announced the word of the current year in the Russian language, and stipulates that borrowed words have syncretic semantics. Context and content analyses help to determine a set of nationally marked meanings within the corpus of loan words. The author claims that syncretism of borrowed words semantics can be treated as a feature of language evolution.
