Abstract


The article presents an analysis of the functioning of gratitude slogans and other statements with the intention of gratitude on postcards of Germany published in the period from 1914 to 1938. The nature of the postcard is considered as a combination of verbal, iconic, graphic and other types of signs; therefore, the functional description of the German gratitude postcards is a comprehensive analysis of the components of the polycode text on the postcard. The types of the gratitude postcards to be agitating and propagandistic are distinguished within the framework of the diachronic approach to the analysis of the German postcards printed in the period from 1914 to 1938. The article shows the process of transformation of verbal and non-verbal means on a German gratitude postcard and its specifics formed depending on the political situation in society.
