Abstract

The article examines the toponymic variability and the derivational potential of toponymic vocabulary on the example of one toponym of the USA - California. A toponym is considered as a socio-biological organism that is born, lives a life and, in some cases, dies. In the course of its life, it generates new toponyms by transonymization and other lexical units by semantic and morphological derivation. Toponyms are a productive base for replenishing the lexical composition of the language, as well as the core of the formation of the cultural and language landscape of the territory.
