Abstract


The article discusses current trends in the study of particles in everyday speech and in public speaking in the English language. The analysis of the terminology used to describe this phenomenon reveals general and specific terminology. The author points out that the focus in the study of particles covers both the dialogical speech and public speech. The analysis of contemporary foreign studies allows the author to put forward a thesis that particles as a type of discourse markers, perform a special function - they establish communicative rapport, as well as express the speaker’s empathy towards the interlocutor.
