Abstract

The article examines the system of multilingual metaphors in V. V. Nabokov's novel “Ada, or Ardor: a Family Chronicle” as a specific form of interlanguage poetics. The author analyzes three levels of functioning of the author′s metaphors – semantic, phonetic and psychosemantic. It is shown that the mixing of English, Russian, French, German, Latin, and Greek forms a unique type of literary text called “palimpsest” in which translation, distortion, and wordplay act as mechanisms of creative generation of meaning; linguistic hybridity is not just a stylistic decoration, but serves as a tool for constructing new artistic worlds.
