Realia as markers of Colombian national identity in Fernando Vallejo Rendón’s novel “La Virgen de los sicarios”

Abstract
The article discusses connections between the terms ‘realia’ and ‘markers of national identity’ in context of linguistic culturology. Excerpts from the Fernando Vallejo’s novel “La Virgen de los sicarios”/“Our Lady of the Assassins” are analyzed to classify certain vocabulary as linguistic markers of national identity. The article shows realia and nationally specific Colombian words to be effective as markers of cultural attachment, while their placement and context within the text is emphasized to be significant.
