Abstract

This article presents a cognitive approach to the study of the mechanism of metonymization, which involves the replacement of one concept by another based on their contiguity. The main types of associative links between input concepts are singled out, which make the metonymic transfer possible. The analysis of metonymic phrases shows that the mechanisms of metonymization often lead to the formation of a new sign-symbol.
