Abstract

The subject of the author’s attention is the controversy around the mystery of D. G. Byron “Cain” (1821), caused by the sharp rejection of the play by a number of representatives of the English clergy and the establishment. The article presents and analyzes the arguments of several opponents and supporters of the mystery, who spoke in the public discussion under pseudonyms. The author notes that the main points of the confrontation are doubts in the traditional Christian explanation of the origin of evil in the world which were expressed by Byron in the mystery.
