The article analyzes translation strategies for rendering toponyms from I. S. Turgenev's works into Chinese. On the basis of study of toponymic space in the novel “Fathers and Sons,” the functions of geographical names in the text's artistic system are examined together with corresponding translation approaches. The study demonstrates that ma- crotoponyms should be transmitted by semantic methods, oiconyms require hybrid approaches (phonetic accuracy combined with semantic subtext), and some toponyms need functional equivalents.
