The theme of shipping and water transport in rhyming slang

Abstract

This article, using rhyming slang as a reference, provides a linguistic and sociocultural analysis of rhymes that reflect or directly encode the realities of water transport. These rhymes are well represented in rhyming slang, but have not yet attracted the attention of the researchers. The analyzed rhymes are borrowed from dictionaries of rhyming and general slang and internet sources, sociocultural information from linguistic dictionaries and dictionaries of culture. By analyzing rhymes containing maritime terms, the theme of water transport, shipping and sea travel appeared in new dimensions and acquired new colours.
