The article deals with the strategy of decompression within a dualistic approach to translation as exemplified by simultaneous interpreting into English of A. Shokhin’s statement at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The processes of transcoding and interpretation are complementary and come to the fore depending on the semantic and communicative features of the original and interpreter’s experience. As a result of the dualistic approach the strategies of calque translation and decompression are used within one and the same utterance. The strategy of decompression ensures that the recipients of translation have as clear understanding of the message as possible, as well as helps to compensate for the semantic losses.
