Abstract

The article focuses on the cognitive approach to studying compression in simultaneous interpreting. Speech compression is analyzed as a cognitive transformation of the system of meanings of the original on a metalinguistic level through identifying such concise means as metaphorical and metonymic transfer. Adequate simultaneous interpretation presupposes deep understanding of the source message: as a result, a cognitive entity of the original emerges in the mind of the interpreter, which they then endeavor to transform into the target message by means of compression.
