Abstract

The article discusses different interpretations of the concept of “native language”. Of the nine interpretations listed in the article, the ethnic approach to determining the content of the term is recognized as the most successful: native language is the national language of the people, its carrier; it is closely connected with national psychology, national consciousness of the people; it reflects the national linguistic picture of the world, expresses the national culture of the people. With such understanding of the native language, the problem of first-priority mastery of one’s native language and the problem of preserving the native languages of small peoples in a multicultural space become especially relevant.
