Abstract

The article deals with informal vocabulary - professionalisms, jargon and slang words - as an integral part of veterinary discourse. An analysis of the state of knowledge of the issue convinces of the relevance of its formulation and testifies to its underdevelopment. Until now, there is no generally accepted definition of the concepts under study. This may be due to the relatively recent interest of linguists in the language of veterinary medicine. Based on a survey of students and practicing veterinarians, a morphological and thematic variety of professionalisms is shown up, their linguistic analysis is carried out. There is an interaction between academic and veterinary discourses, since students’ acquaintance with informal professional vocabulary begins already during training. Professionalisms function in the oral sphere of communication; they perform the nominative function, create a sense of belonging and serve as a cognitive frame “one’s own” - “alien”. The conclusion is made about the need to study them as units with high socio- and linguistic information in terms of participation in cognition, the formation of a professional worldview and the communicative competence of future specialists.
