Abstract

The article deals with various techniques of punning in short Russian anecdotes. The empiric material is divided into several subgroups of examples, depending on the contextual ways of word play on which the pun is based. The subgroups include puns based on homonymy, antonomasia, antithesis, lexical ellipsis, on the interaction of professional terminology with commonly used words, stylistically neutral with low colloquial words, the play on misinterpretation of words, etc. The material was collected from the pages of Russian periodicals of the last two decades.
