Abstract
Synthesis of the polysaccharide callose (β-1,3-glucan) was studied in the common wheat Thatcher var. and its near-isogenic lines with adult resistance genes to leaf rust Lr34 and Lr35 using biochemical and cytochemical methods. In the tissues of lines with adult resistance the increased callose synthesis was determined in the late stages of pathogenesis, presumably near the pustules. It was assumed that the accumulation of callose districted the transport of metabolites to the generative fungus cells and is one of the factors limiting the reproduction of pathogen.
